Curtain Players is excited to announce the playwrights selected to participate in the 2021-2022 New Works Initiative. Now in its fourth year, the New Works Initiative continues the playhouse's longtime support of new play development — building on the successes of the previous Curtain Players Playwrights Festival and Simply Staged Series — by working with central Ohio writers to workshop and develop full-length plays.
The upcoming season will see the New Works Initiative expanded compared to previous years, as six projects were selected for development for season 59. The playwrights selected for this year's workshop are:
Bea Gardner & Dave Russell
The six projects will go through a series of workshops with local actors and directors to give the playwrights a chance to hear their works out loud as they continue to revise the plays for future presentation. A series of public readings will be presented at the playhouse in 2022. Details about the schedule and projects will be released at a later date.
For the first time, the New Works Initiative invited writers to submit an application, consisting of a pitch for a new play and script samples. Previous New Works Initiative playwrights include: Jeremy Sony, Stefan Farrenkopf, Emily Turner, Chris Leyva, Keely Kurtas-Chapman, Sarah Cabe, Tay Lane, and Noah Martin.
The New Works Initiative is run by local playwright and longtime Curtain Players member Jeremy Sony, who created the program during the 2018-2019 season to give local playwrights access to workshop-style new play development and a public staged reading of their work. Sony is a veteran writer of both the original Curtain Players Playwrights Festival and Simply Staged Series. He earned his MFA in Playwriting from Ohio University, and his plays have been seen locally at MadLab, LTOB, Available Light, and Curtain Players.
